Case Study: Proving Criminal Intent with Call Records, GPS, and Device Battery Status Data

After a woman was found brutally murdered in her home, the police turned to her ex-boyfriend as a prime suspect in the investigation. The ex-boyfriend presented a strong alibi to investigators that he was with his current girlfriend on the other side of town at the time of the crime.

Upon further investigation, police discovered that the ex-boyfriend lied about his whereabouts during the night in question. They began to put together evidence of his involvement and turned to the data to find out exactly what happened. The data that the investigators had included:

• Call records from both suspects
• A GPS tracker the suspect allegedly planted in the victim’s car. The tracker had a SIM card, which provides CDR data, GPS pings, and battery levels.

What investigators needed was a way to look at all the data in a single timeline to understand what happened the night of the murder.

GeoTime is joined by Stefan Mayer, Crime Analyst from the Austrian Federal Police, as he walks through this case study and demonstrates how he combined all the case data — battery status, GPS, and CDR data into GeoTime, and what was discovered.

Case Study: Solving the Bernhardt double-homicide cold case 45-years later

The Bernhardt’s, both just 24 years old, were supposed to attend a family dinner on the evening of Nov. 6, 1973, but at the last minute turned down the invitation. The next day, Linda’s mother stopped by the house after being informed her daughter had not shown up for work. It was there she found her son-in-law face down in a pool of blood and her daughter dead in a separate bedroom. Linda had been sexually assaulted, her clothes torn away. There was evidence that the murderer was someone known to them, as there were place settings for a meal for three.

The case haunted Billings for the next four decades, and investigators and family members would never stop chasing one simple, unanswered question: Who killed the Bernhardts?

In this case study presentation, we are joined by Greg Copper and Dean Jackson from the Cold Case Foundation, who were asked to join alongside the investigators at Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Department as they worked this case.

Tracing an Overdose: Using cell phone evidence to find and convict the dealer

In April 2019, police officers responded to a fatal fentanyl overdose. The fatal overdose was treated as a homicide and immediately investigative steps were taken to identify the drug dealer responsible.

An analysis of the victim’s cell phone, recovered from the scene, revealed evidence of who he had been in contact with and purchased narcotics from. Using this information, law enforcement agents conducted a covert operation to purchase narcotics from the victim’s drug dealer. He was arrested upon his arrival at the agreed-upon location.

In this webinar, subject matter expert Darryl Valinchus discusses his work on this case and how he used call detail records and Cellebrite extraction data from the victim and dealer’s phone to quickly and easily:

  • Analyze, visualize, and quickly identify which handsets spoke to each other (and which handsets didn’t speak to each other to eliminate them from analysis)
  • Search the date, time, and content of the messages recovered from the phone
  • Establish that the dealer used a street name, and was the user of the “deal” phone
  • Prove arrangements were made for pickup and payment
